Hallstatt, Gosau, and Gmunden are nature’s jewels that, though almost invisible to the tourist industry, attract those seeking authentic and unexplored beauty.
If your dream is to experience an Austrian adventure beyond the usual, these places are the perfect destination for you. Let your heart follow the path of lakes and mountains, and let’s discover together the magical world of the Austrian Alps.
🚗 Our journey begins… 🚗
We began our adventure by car, which we rented from Vienna, where we were spending our Christmas holidays. We chose to make this unique trip as a day excursion, enjoying the freedom of the car to explore at our own pace. However, there are other ways to visit these enchanting places, and below we list the best options for getting around the area.
Before the sun had even risen, we were already in the car, ready to depart from Vienna with our first destination being Gmunden. There, we made our first stop to stretch our legs, enjoy something delicious, and lose ourselves, even for a moment, in the enchanting landscape. The lake, the majestic mountains, and the vast sky came together in a scene straight out of a fairytale. It was the perfect start to our adventure.

Next, we continued on to Hallstatt, making a wonderful intermediate stop in Traunkirchen to enjoy the view from the hill with the small chapel, which seemed to come straight out of an old painting.

When we arrived in Hallstatt, the scenery was simply magical. The sun had begun to set, and the village seemed to have come out of a dream. The sense of time had stopped, and for a moment, everything around us had the calmness of a fairytale.
We spent most of our trip in Hallstatt, enjoying every corner of this picturesque village. We explored the quaint streets, bought beautiful souvenirs, captured countless moments with our camera, and, of course, tried an excellent grilled trout, which completed our culinary experience.

Afterward, we headed to Gosau, arriving just before sunset. There, the snow-covered mountain peak reflected in the calm surface of the lake, creating such a magical scene that it was hard to believe it was real. We spent quite some time there, photographing and enjoying the moment, as if time had stopped to give us this perfect image.

As the sun set and we began our way back to Vienna, our drive through the forests and small villages was full of magic. The wooden houses adorned with Christmas lights, the smoke rising from the chimneys, gave the feeling that we were in a Christmas fairytale land.
The return to Vienna felt like completing a dream that we wanted to relive over and over again.
TIP: Our recommendation is to take the round trip to these three enchanting towns, as each one offers unique experiences and landscapes worth discovering. The best choice is to rent a car, as it gives you the freedom to adjust your schedule at your own pace and enjoy the journey at your leisure. However, if you don’t wish to drive, there are organized tours covering these three destinations, offering transportation and guided tours to each location, allowing you to explore the area without any worries.
Before diving deeper into these magical places, it’s worth taking a look at the distances we covered and the time it took us to drive from one spot to another:
- Starting from Vienna, we covered 235 kilometers to our first stop in Gmunden, taking a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- Next, from Gmunden to our next stop in Traunkirchen, we drove 11 kilometers, taking 18 minutes.
- Next, from Traunkirchen to Hallstatt, we covered 43 kilometers in about 50 minutes.
- From Hallstatt to Gosau, we covered 14 kilometers in 15 minutes.
- Finally, for the return journey from Gosau to Vienna, we covered 293 kilometers in 3 hours and 30 minutes.
