Corfu: A Journey into the Magic of the Ionian

Every corner of Corfu tells a story – from the Venetian castles to the colors of the sunset that paint the Ionian Sea. This island harmoniously combines the magic of nature with the timeless beauty of Venetian architecture. Its beaches, hidden like treasures, and its picturesque villages, ready to welcome you with authentic hospitality, promise to leave you with unforgettable memories. This Travel Guide is the beginning of your journey to the heart of Corfu, an island that invites you to discover it with all your senses.

History

Corfu has a long and rich history, shaped by various civilizations due to its strategic location in the Ionian Sea. In antiquity, it was an important center of the Greek world, later coming under Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, French, and British rule. The Venetians (1386-1797) left the most significant influence, shaping the island’s architecture and culture. Unlike the rest of Greece, Corfu was never under Ottoman occupation. In 1864, it was united with Greece, and today it remains one of the country’s most charming and historically rich destinations.

How to Reach Corfu

Corfu, with its excellent accessibility, is one of the most popular destinations in the Ionian. There are several ways to reach the island, depending on your preference. If you wish to travel by air, Corfu’s Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport is the perfect choice, as it receives flights from many Greek cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as a wide range of international destinations, especially during the tourist season.

For a more scenic and relaxing route, you can reach Corfu by ferry from mainland Greece, such as from Igoumenitsa. The fast ferries and conventional ferries connect the two ports daily, offering a stunning view of the Ionian Sea—ideal for those who want to enjoy the sea and the natural landscape.

Regardless of your mode of transport, Corfu is always ready to welcome visitors with open arms and natural beauty. We chose to travel by car from Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa and then take the ferry to Corfu. This decision helped us avoid renting a car on the island, an extra cost we could easily avoid, while also offering us a more comfortable and pleasant journey. The ferry ride was delightful, with fantastic views of the Ionian Sea, and soon we arrived in Corfu to explore the unparalleled beauty of the island.
